Reviews - Bane or Blessing

Reviews are both the bane and ultimate blessing of a writer’s existence.

When I penned my first page, it wasn’t because I craved accolades; it was because I had to. One interviewer put it correctly in the perfect questions – When did writing chose you? Of course, I’m certain that not all authors write because they’re compelled to, but that’s how writing works for me.

The second a germ of a tale percolates, that’s it, I’m done for. I have to write the story – I can delay finishing the manuscript – but the characters will nag at me until I finish their journey. Okay, seeing those words on a page is scary – and even I’m asking – does she maybe need therapy? But, it’s the God-awful truth.

But, I digress. I write because I have to – to retain some semblance of sanity. Yet, that first review is a validation of sorts. If it stinks, you’re reeling. If it’s great, you walk around mentally regurgitating the sweet phrases from the review.

A fabulous review has me ecstatic. A bad review makes me go back to the book and try to objectively see if the reviewer’s criticism has merit. My whole objective with this writing gig is simply to make my book better. Ask any editor who’s worked with me – I relish constructive criticism.

But, I’ve seen some downright nasty, mean-spirited reviews that should never have seen the light of day. Almost as if the reviewer bore the author a grudge. At the same time, any published author puts his or her self out there and must expect one and five star reviews. However, a vitriolic review only reflects back on the reviewer, particularly those who complain bitterly about a $.99 tale not being worth the money. Come on.

The worst type of review, for me, is a four or five star review that reads ho-hum. Why give a book four or five stars and not be positive? I’ve been lucky enough to receive some glowing four or five star reviews for my work, but some five star reviews have read as if the reviewer fell asleep writing it. Boggles the mind.

That said here are links to three new reviews for Deviant Devil:

Now, I have a question for the reviewers – why do you review?

Why do I review? One reason is that I just love to read. Why not use that to let others know about a great new author I've found or a book that just won't let go of my mind? I've found genres and authors I probably never would have tried if I wasn't a reviewer. Did I mention I love to read? LOL!!!

Thanks for dropping by Julianne. That's a great reason to review - discovering new reading treats. Question for you - what is the proper reviewer etiquette? I don't thank a reviewer anymore because I'm afraid to look like I'm currying favor. Do you expect to hear from authors?

I review because that's one of the things I take into account when I want to read a book - how have others felt about it? Like Julianne, I've found many, many new authors due to other reviewers, so it's something I take very seriously! And, no - I don't expect to hear from an author. It does certainly brighten my day when I do, however ;-)

Jianne, The site I review for has a 5 rating system. The reviewers email the authors when the books they've read go live. Anything 3 and under the reviewer doesn't have to email the author. When I let an author know that I've reviewed their book, I also give them the link to the review so they can read it or mention on their website or blog to visit the link of their new review. It is nice to hear back from the author for two reasons, 1) I know that they received the email, and 2) I like to know that the author appreciated that I took the time for their book.

Julianne, It's great to hear from you and Gena - being on the other end of the sword, so to speak. If I'm notified of a review, I always thank the reviewer. It's only polite, after all. My bad, for not being specific. Many times I'm not notified and I come across the review. On those occasions, I don't have an email address for the reviewer. I'm always loathe to comment on a review of my work - so what do you do in those situations? Advice appreciated.

Jianne, I can't imagine a reviewer not notifying the author, but it must happen. In that case, there would be no way to thank the reviewer. I believe our review site also lets the publisher know about the review, the review coordinator does that. I'm not sure I'm helping with your question. About your other comment about reading some just plain nasty reviews, I've also read some that made my mouth hit the floor. My first thought is, didn't you read the blurb about what kind of book you're reading. I feel there isn't a reason to be so downright nasty. To me it shows how uncouth they are, especially if their's is the only bad review. I don't pay any attention to those kinds of reviews. I guess I'm rambling now so I'll get off the soap box. :)
