Favorite Genres

What’s your favorite romance genre?
People ask me that all the time. Since I’ve written almost every genre, save for futuristic and sci-fi -- to me the answer’s obvious – every genre, save maybe futuristic and sci-fi.
That’s not to say I don’t enjoy those genres, but they’re not the first books I’ll pick up ordinarliy. Mind you, I just finished Lynn Lorenz’s The Ambassador’s Daughter, and I loved that. In terms of other genres, I have a definite weakness for anything SEAL or warrior-based, love historicals, paranormals, suspense, and mysteries -- *rolling eyes* -- just put me down for category = all.
But, since embarking on this writing gig, I’ve noticed that the romance audience is definitely stratified. I know writers and readers who won’t touch an m/f book, and will only read ménages or m/m. I’ve met those for whom all things paranormal rule supreme. And, of course, there are the trends where a particular genre suddenly blossoms in popularity, like steam punk.
A while back I had the privilege of sitting next to Sherilynn Kenyon at a dinner. She said that for a long time she tried to write what was trendy at the moment, but nothing jived until she wrote what was in her heart. And we all know what happened after that.
One of my author friends told me that I should stick to one genre and establish a brand. My heart’s just not in that. I figure the brand I’d like to establish is this – if you pick up a Jianne Carlo book – it’ll be a great read no matter what the genre.

So, do you have a favorite genre?

Cheers,

Jianne

I'm with you - I like most genres, but all erotic. That's neat you got to have dinner with Sheriylnn. Love her books.

I think reading or writing all one genre is a bit like listening to just one type of music all the time. Even if every song is good, you can get sick of it after a while if you never hear anything else. I'm all for variety. I think writing in multiple genres and subgenres can boost an author's creativity.

What a novel analogy Allie. I totally agree with you. Adding to that - I tend to not what to hear an overplayed song on the radio after a while. Do you think that happens with readers and genres?

Would you have any idea when 'Deviant Devil' will be available at another publisher. I do not like to buy my books from Loose Id as they don't use PayPal. I bought the first 2 books from All Romance. Have loved each of your books that I have read. Lynn

Lynn, I'm not sure when Devil goes to other publishers - I'll check and let you know. Hey - your comment is a contest entry. Have you seen the new Kindles? OMG I am drooling over the Fire.
