CENT Day 23 (Celebratory Empty Nest Trip)

CENT Days 23

No - I didn’t skip a day. Yesterday’s blog should have been titled Days 20, 21 & 22.

We arrived early in Port Arthur, Texas; a town located on the gulf a tad shy of the Louisiana border. The city of approximately 60,000 people has been devastated by hurricanes several years in a row and anything that’s not half falling apart has been mowed down and replaced by brand new buildings.

There is much poverty in this rural area, which is made up of a few separate townships, including one named Nederland - the DH got a real chuckle out of this as Nederland means The Netherlands in Dutch. Apparently, Dutch settlers colonized the land in the early 1800s because the terrain reminded them of their homeland, flat, fertile, and prone to flooding. Go figure - it’s beyond my reasoning the last one, flooding is attractive???

Everyone in this area is friendly to a fault - the hotel manager, Walgreen employees, everyone you made eye contact with said hi and asked if you needed any help. We asked for a recommendation for dinner and the unanimous verdict was Larry’s.

What a terrific Cajun restaurant filled with regulars and servers greeting each other and people table-hopping to visit with each other. The band started playing, men and women of all ages flocked to the dance floor, and then the line dancing began. The crawfish ordered, our toes tapping to a vibrant Cajun melody, we sipped beer, ate, and stayed long past our bedtime!

Cheers,

JC
